Issues Still Remain Labor Day is a day to honor the working men and women of America. Nowadays, the poverty levels in urban areas are scandalous. Many wage-earners cannot find work, and even if they do, incomes are too low to support their families. Inflationary realities across the board have become incredible: gas and energy costs, housing, insurance, taxes, medical and dental care, food, etc. The deterioration of their circumstances has resulted in foreclosures, bankruptcies, more homeless people, ad infinitum. ...more

AVON PARK — As a Long Island, N.Y. police officer, Eddie Mahoney couldn't see himself in a uniform with short hair for 20 years. Trading in his badge for a microphone and with a slight name change, Eddie Money couldn't "Walk on Water," but he would go on to belt out a string of powerful rock songs from the late '70s and the 1980s. Continuing to be one of the hardest working men in rock and roll, Money and his band will take the stage at 7:30 p.m., June 27 at the South Florida Community College Auditorium. What happened in Highlands County? Is is not important enough for family time to allow our hard working men and women truck drivers to come home and find a safe place to park the big rig for a short period? Is our truck driver husband or wives values not important, or have we forgotten this and just decided to be hard-nosed about it? There are plenty of empty parking lots in the county. What's the big deal? Why can't truckers park there without incident? Truckers are not destroying property or harming anybody. They just want to see their families. ...more
