SEBRING — A low-income, senior citizen with a homestead house gets an extra tax break of $36.77 per year on property taxes under the low-income, senior exemption. That's based on Highlands County commissioners granting a $5,000 exemption under the "Save Our Seniors" tax break for low-income people age 65 and older. State law, though, allows counties to set this special exemption anywhere from zero to a maximum exemption of $50,0000 off taxable property value. At the $50,000 exemption level, the tax savings for the low-income, a senior homeowner with a homestead house would jump tenfold, up to $367.77 per year. ...more

SEBRING — Three weeks ago, when Amendment One was passed, the great unknown was portability. That provision in the constitutional amendment allows homeowners to take the 3 percent their Save Our Home caps property taxes and move it to a new home. ...more

SEBRING – The persistence of one man looks like it will pay off in an additional tax break for Highlands County's 1,500 low-income, senior-citizen homeowners. We are aiding economies worldwide from the many military bases we have all over the world. The president now wishes to build another base in Iraq. Some of those who are running in 2008 support this same policy. We must have congressional over sight on the military industrial complex. We must close many bases overseas, many over 50 years old. These many bases could just as well be located in the United States, aiding the states where they are relocated. ...more
