If it is true that over 40 of our teachers, the heart of our educational system, are facing termination, I suggest that instead of tip-toeing to Tallahassee or begging Obama, we halt for a bit. Let's turn to the successful scam perpetrated by a ruby throated shill who hatched the state lottery. Maybe, there's a golden power-ball lurking in the general fund to refill educations coffers. ...more

This is an open letter to the school board. I know you are trying to be fair and did the best you can with the budget but please do not cut high school and middle school athletics! They are so important to the kids, especially now. In a recession when many parents are laid off, there is usually more tension in the house. Playing sports can help save the day. As you know, the argument is that sports keep the kids off the street and out of trouble. Many pro athletes have said sports also kept them focused and helped them concentrate better in school. ...more

Recently I read in the paper that the Highlands County School Board is considering a 2 percent cut in teachers pay. Teachers in this area don't make what other area schools close by are making and it's difficult enough now to get and keep teachers here in our county. My question is are these cuts only pertaining to the teachers or are others included. Our kids have suffered enough with the shortage of teachers and over-crowded classrooms. Has anyone considered what this will do to our kids? I guess we'll be teaching our kids at home over the Internet. The problem with that is not every kid has access to a computer or the Internet. By the way, where do the monies from the state lottery go to? My guess would be to fund that test that not everyone agrees with (FCAT,) but that's another subject. That's my take on the matter, save our kids and our teachers. Look somewhere else for these cuts. ...more

What has happened to our country? I couldn't imagine things getting this bad to where our kids would have to pay to be involved in school sports. Several questions come to mind, one being, what happened to the monies the state lottery was to give toward the schools? Oh let me guess, it's all earmarked for FCAT. ...more
