Harold was teeing off from the back tees. On his down-swing, he suddenly realized that his wife, Judy, was about to tee off from the red tees, directly in his path. Unable to stop his down swing he nailed the ball, hit Judy directly in the right temple, killing her instantly. A few days later Harold received a call from the coroner concerning her autopsy . As Cargill shuts down its juice plants in Avon Park and Frostproof, it's a reminder that Highlands County is changing. Fewer and fewer citrus farms exist. Farms that are more valuable as housing developments or shopping malls than they can possibly produce in orange juice. Slowly, the citrus groves along U.S. 27 are disappearing. So are the groves on U.S. 98, between U.S. 27 and Spring Lake. They will remain along our country roads. Cargill Juice North America is laying off an additional 20 to 25 workers at Avon Park and Frostproof by Jan. 31. The company is getting out of the citrus processing business in Florida. SEBRING — A dryer fire call to 332 Spring Lake Blvd., in Sebring, was answered by the Lorida and DeSoto City volunteer fire departments at about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. The fire was put out immediately, said Lorida Assistant Chief Swen Swenson on Thursday. The fire was contained to the garage area and no one was injured, he said. When firefighters arrived they pulled the dryer outside and began ventilating the home, which sustained some smoke damage. By 3 a.m. American Red Cross volunteers arrived to help the family of seven. An American Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteer with the office in Highlands arrived to provide help for the family of five adults and two children. The Red Cross was able to provide temporary shelter, emergency assistance for groceries, comfort kits (hygiene kits), teddy bears to help comfort the children and odor-control concentrated cleaner to help salvage items in the home. ...more
