When Ricky Giles steps on the field this summer, he sees many Pirates fans. They aren't in the stands, but on the field. For the past four years, the longtime Pasco High baseball coach has held a baseball camp for the youths in Pasco County. AVON PARK — Looking confident and excited, the Avon Park High School Class of 2008, 199 strong, proudly accepted their diplomas at Friday night's graduation ceremony. Parents, relatives, teachers and administrators, applauded the accomplishment of the seniors at the commencement exercises at the South Florida Community College Auditorium. Principal Stu Guthrie said "I would like to thank the Class of 2008 for their hard work and dedication that they have shown over the past 13 years. They've faced adversity, trials and tribulations on their way to the top and their graduation here tonight — so we are extremely proud." Salutatorian Casey Lynn McKibben used his absence, due to participation in a national ATV competition, to his advantage with a cleverly produced video. ...more

Regarding "Dungy Son Transfer Produces Questions" (front page, Jan. 16): Congratulations on beginning an inquiry on the abuse of special school assignments by athletes in Hillsborough County. Please continue your investigation. It would be interesting to know how many special transfers are approved so kids can play sports at a "good" school. If the district doesn't want to give names (and I understand that in the case of minors) they should at least have to provide accurate data on how many transfers subsequently play a varsity sport at their new school. ...more

Of course Michael Vick should get a second chance, but not in the NFL. Can you imagine the signs that would be held up in the stands during a game? I don't believe Michael's return to the NFL would be in the best interest of sportsmanship for others to follow. He could go into the Canadian Football League. Canada views our dissenters and runaways quite differently then we. Maybe killing dogs and beating them is not criminal in Canada. ...more
