Everyone's feeling queasy these days watching the financial markets plummet due to the sub-prime loan fiasco. Younger folks, however, at least have time on their side. Senior citizens are seeing their life savings tank with little time for a market rebound. It sends a powerful message that whatever a person has saved for retirement might not be enough, unless it's protected from market influences. For most people, that isn't the case. ...more

Along with dusty family heirlooms, mattresses and furniture, self-storage units are serving as homes for a growing number of homeless people. It's not a widespread practice, but there are more people renting space and sneaking in at some storage units around Hillsborough County. There's no plumbing, and it's strictly against a myriad of rules, but people without homes are finding the rent cheap and accommodations safer than on the streets. ...more

Here's a sobering thought that nobody seems to be raising: If we had followed the plan to privatize Social Security by investing in Wall Street securities, then this week's meltdown of our financial system would be eating up the retirement plans of millions of seniors. And the government bailout of major financials - at a discount - would have cost all Americans even more than it's costing us now. ...more

In regard to Sarah Palin and all the attention focused on her, I have to wonder, when did we start treating politicians like celebrities? More and more it seems we act as if these people are somehow better than the common person. And the last thing these egotistical people need is celebrity status. Sarah Palin is a virtual unknown. She has very little experience in politics, and has yet to speak honestly about her beliefs. In the ads and interviews so far, she has simply followed a script. In the matter of her brother-in-law trooper, why doesn't she just say, "Yes, I tried my best to remove him from his job. He's a bully and actually threatened my family with physical violence. I think anyone would do the same?" ...more
