I was taken aback while reading the Opinion section this morning. Your paper prints the column of Leonard Pitts, who I admittedly am unfamiliar with as I am currently stationed in South Korea and am just home for 30 days of leave to be with my family. However, in the opening paragraph, Mr. Pitts references his previous column and that he would like to question Sarah Palin about her attempts to ban books at the library in Wasilla, Alaska. This would not be so disturbing a statement if it came from a 12 year old. But coming from a columnist it is appalling. If Mr. Pitts were but to research his information rather than reporting as fact every bit of e-mail spam that comes across his desk, he would know that the story is entirely fictitious and that some of the books on her "list" were not even printed at the time she supposedly called for their being banned. I am providing the link dispelling the rumor for your readers: http://www.snopes.com/politics/palin/bannedbooks.asp ...more

There's an old saying about rumors: even one without a leg to stand on will still make its way all over town. That was when misinformation was spread by word of mouth and most times died out before causing much harm. That was before the Internet and e-mail. ...more

Editor's note: This parable about taxes has circulated on the Internet for years, attributed to various professors and economists. Its authorship remains unclear, though Snopes.com says it was first printed in a letter to the editor in The Chicago Tribune. It may be well-traveled, but this little lesson retains its relevance and charm. ...more

In regards to Jim Gulledge's letter I have to say I agree with him 100 percent. I just don't understand people or the press. I know the press is suppose to be people also. But there are times I wonder. I too am very concerned about a man running for president of this country who does not honor its flag. I sent Highlands Today an e-mail I had received on that subject. I did not ask them to print the e-mail. I said I felt this should be looked into an article ran, so the people of Highlands County can make informed choices. I am very well aware of the fact all e-mails you receive aren't factual and I did contact www.snopes before I made such a request. Snopes did say "true" to the story I had been sent. For those of you who may not know, snopes is a site on Internet that will check out a story for you, and let you know if the story is true, partially true or false, so I am not running my mouth about something I know nothing about. Except Mr. Gulledge's letter, I have not seen one word on Sen. Barack Obama. ...more

No, Virginia, Santa Claus was not invented by the Coca-Cola Co. The contention that Coke created the modern image of Santa and decked him out in corporate red has become something of an urban myth in recent years. Just the other day, the BBC phoned Coca-Cola archivist Phil Mooney and put him on the radio to address the issue. ...more
