The caring and generosity of the dart throwers and golfers in Highlands County is well known. That point was driven home once again in Saturday's annual Toys For Tots golf tournament. SEBRING –– The inaugural Jacob Casey Scholarship and Educational Fund golf tournament was held Saturday at Harder Hall Country Club. Casey, who spent his childhood in Avon Park, moved to Ocala and played football on the Trinity Catholic squad that won the Class 2A state championship. Jacob was tragically killed in a car accident and his father, Brian, came up with the idea for the memorial. "This is a non-profit tournament," said Casey. "All the funds raised will go to underprivileged youth in Highlands County." Current Gator backup quarterback John Brantley, who played with Jacob at Trinity Catholic, along with several other Gator athletes, participated in the event. ...more

SEBRING — Taking advantage of perfect weather and outstanding scoring conditions, the talented duo of Frank Guglielmi and Dale Anderson shot an impressive 12-under-par 60 to finish first in the Championship Flight of the Sebring Sunrise Rotary Club's annual Smith Barney golf tournament at Sun 'N Lake Country Club on Saturday. SEBRING –– With a foursome comprised of some of the finest shot-makers in the Heartland, the multi-talented team of Grover Crawford, Mike Browning, Rene Brown and Vince Liles shot a 17-under-par 55 to run away with first place in the Championship Flight of the Blue Streak Classic golf tournament on Saturday. The 25th annual event attracted a field of 116 players, who competed in a four-person scramble format over 18 holes of the par-72 Turtle Run course at Sun 'N Lake Country Club. Placing second in the Championship Flight with a fine 59 was the team of Ryan Magnuson, Kip Goolsby, Travis Rapp and Chris Myers. ...more

AVON PARK –– Putting a team together for a scramble golf tournament is something of a science in itself. A combination of a long hitter, solid iron play and a good putter usually provides for a competitive foursome. That's what the talented team of James Lizotte, Pete DuPriest, Jerome Bovve and Phil Simonson had, as they finished with a 57 to win the Championship Flight in Saturday's Sebring Noon Kiwanis Club's 24th annual Kiwanis Charities Golf Classic at Highlands Ridge North. The popular tournament attracted a field of 108 golfers who participated in a four-person scramble format. SEBRING — The talented foursome of Don Spires, Jeff Spires, Danny Sassin and Smokey Smiling made some sweet music in Saturday's Sebring High School Band Booster golf tournament at Sebring Golf Club. The group combined to shoot an 18-hole net score of 41 to win the scramble format event, which was a fundraiser for the Sebring High band. Joe DeCerbo, Al Iorinelli, Tony Galka and Alvin Walters placed second in the First Flight with a 45.75, while Dick White, Karen White, Mark White and Tony Mordenga finished third with a 47. ...more

The one-day, 18-hole tournament attracted a field of 96 golfers, who played a four-person scramble format over the demanding 6,700-yard, par 72 Turtle Run course at Sun N Lake Country Club. LAKE PLACID –– Making a move up the ladder. That's what Bill and Barbara Lockwood did by finishing first in Saturday's Heartland Couples Golf tournament at Placid Lakes Country Club. The Lockwood's shot a 71 in the two-person scramble format over the demanding Placid Lakes Country Club course, while the talented duo of Rodney and Lisa Davis also carded a 1-under-par 71. A tiebreaker was required to decide first place in the 14-team event, and the Lockwood's won the Gross Division with a score of four on the third hole, while the Davis' carded a five. ...more
