LAKE PLACID — The alleys in town might not be major thoroughfares like the Panama Canal, I-75 or Pennsylvania Avenue, but a move is on to clear these publicly owned roadways. Resident Lynn Connolly counted 12 east-west and five north-south alleys located in backyards, or behind businesses, south of Interlake Boulevard, in the oldest residential part of the town. She presented the idea at the most recent town council meeting. Only Edgemon Alley is named. Most are grass covered. Many are 19.5-foot wide, the same width as most town streets. ...more

AVON PARK — Construction for the targeting systems to be used for the Avon Park Air Force Range's live bombing operations has been pushed back somewhat, but the operations are still slated to begin February 2009, a Navy spokesman said. U.S. Fleet Forces Command spokesman Jim Brantley from Norfolk, Va. said that infrastructure should be built sometime during the summer, though he couldn't be more specific. AVON PARK — A spokesman for the Navy said Thursday that the timeline has been pushed back yet again for live bombing operations to begin at the Avon Park Air Force Range. Jim Brantley, a media relations officer with the Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., said the Navy now expects to begin using live bombs at the range by January or February 2009. He said it was pushed back because the funds –– a "small amount" of $1.5 million –– were not previously available, even though they are now. The Navy planned to negotiate construction contracts with the Air Force and a contracting agent, which would be awarded by March. Site development is slated for April or May with the construction of roadways and electronic devices used to score how well the bombers are doing. The last of the instrumentation should be installed sometime during the fall. ...more
