SEBRING –– The inaugural Jacob Casey Scholarship and Educational Fund golf tournament was held Saturday at Harder Hall Country Club. Casey, who spent his childhood in Avon Park, moved to Ocala and played football on the Trinity Catholic squad that won the Class 2A state championship. Jacob was tragically killed in a car accident and his father, Brian, came up with the idea for the memorial. "This is a non-profit tournament," said Casey. "All the funds raised will go to underprivileged youth in Highlands County." Current Gator backup quarterback John Brantley, who played with Jacob at Trinity Catholic, along with several other Gator athletes, participated in the event. ...more

SEBRING — Taking advantage of perfect weather and outstanding scoring conditions, the talented duo of Frank Guglielmi and Dale Anderson shot an impressive 12-under-par 60 to finish first in the Championship Flight of the Sebring Sunrise Rotary Club's annual Smith Barney golf tournament at Sun 'N Lake Country Club on Saturday. The one-day, 18-hole event attracted a field of 108 players, who competed in a two-person scramble format over the demanding 6,500-yard, par 72 Turtle Run course. ...more

SEBRING –– With a foursome comprised of some of the finest shot-makers in the Heartland, the multi-talented team of Grover Crawford, Mike Browning, Rene Brown and Vince Liles shot a 17-under-par 55 to run away with first place in the Championship Flight of the Blue Streak Classic golf tournament on Saturday. The 25th annual event attracted a field of 116 players, who competed in a four-person scramble format over 18 holes of the par-72 Turtle Run course at Sun 'N Lake Country Club. Placing second in the Championship Flight with a fine 59 was the team of Ryan Magnuson, Kip Goolsby, Travis Rapp and Chris Myers. ...more

AVON PARK –– Putting a team together for a scramble golf tournament is something of a science in itself. A combination of a long hitter, solid iron play and a good putter usually provides for a competitive foursome. That's what the talented team of James Lizotte, Pete DuPriest, Jerome Bovve and Phil Simonson had, as they finished with a 57 to win the Championship Flight in Saturday's Sebring Noon Kiwanis Club's 24th annual Kiwanis Charities Golf Classic at Highlands Ridge North. The popular tournament attracted a field of 108 golfers who participated in a four-person scramble format. Placing a close second with a 58 was the group of Pete Coughlin, Sandy Foster, Charlie Little and Marty Roepstorff. ...more

SEBRING –– The second year of the Players Club Golf Tour is at hand and the first tournament of the season is set for March 15 at Sebring Golf Club. The brainchild of former Sebring Golf Club professional Tom McClurg (who left the Heartland in December to take a job as Director of Golf at Chula Vista Golf Resort in the Dells, Wis.) the Players Club Tour will be run by River Greens golf course professional Jason Beatty. "Tom started these events to give the local players a chance to compete in individual tournaments on Saturdays over the course of the year," Beatty said. "I'm looking forward to the first tournament, and I hope a lot of the local golfers take advantage of this opportunity." A $75 membership fee is required to play in the tournaments. ...more

SEBRING — The talented foursome of Don Spires, Jeff Spires, Danny Sassin and Smokey Smiling made some sweet music in Saturday's Sebring High School Band Booster golf tournament at Sebring Golf Club. The group combined to shoot an 18-hole net score of 41 to win the scramble format event, which was a fundraiser for the Sebring High band. Joe DeCerbo, Al Iorinelli, Tony Galka and Alvin Walters placed second in the First Flight with a 45.75, while Dick White, Karen White, Mark White and Tony Mordenga finished third with a 47. ...more

The one-day, 18-hole tournament attracted a field of 96 golfers, who played a four-person scramble format over the demanding 6,700-yard, par 72 Turtle Run course at Sun N Lake Country Club. SEBRING –– When it comes to donating time and money for a good cause, the folks in the Heartland always rise to the occasion. That was the case with Saturday's 16th annual Brad Doty Memorial Children's' Golf Classic at Sebring Golf Club. The one-day, 18-hole, four-person scramble event attracted a field of 106 golfers, and the talented foursome of Alan Price, Floyd Osborne, Gary Williams and Ennis Caldwell finished first in the Championship Flight after shooting a 20-under-par score of 52, which included a team handicap. The awesome team of Pat Dell, Lars Bylund, AJ Balding and Mike Lamp also shot 20-under, but lost the match of cards to place second. The tournament raised more than $14,000, and the proceeds will go to buy Christmas gifts for needy children and families in Highlands County. ...more
