Beginning today, several thousand more drivers each day will be impacted by a new traffic pattern on Memorial Highway (State Road 60) southwest of Tampa International Airport. On Aug. 19, a switch affected traffic coming in either direction from Interstate 275 and Kennedy Boulevard. With Hillsborough and Pinellas counties reporting pedestrian fatality rates higher than the national average, the Florida Department of Transportation today is launching a "Stop and Look" campaign for drivers and pedestrians. "The Stop and Look safety campaign will encourage pedestrians to be predictable to motorists and for motorists to drive alert and share the road," department District 7 Secretary of Transportation Don Skelton said in a news release. ...more

Maybe it was all the new signs. Maybe it was the barrage of warnings from the Department of Transportation and the media. Whatever the case, Tampa Bay area motorists seemed to deal with the newly realigned Memorial Highway with barely a brake light or traffic jam on Wednesday. The morning drive time seemed unaffected, and even the 5 p.m. traffic crunch appeared no worse than usual. The changes were instituted Wednesday morning and most affected drivers getting off Memorial Highway onto the Courtney Campbell Causeway. ...more
