Gerald Seeber, who addressed the board at a meeting this week in New Port Richey, said Tampa Bay Water has reduced groundwater pumping significantly since 2002, in part because of increased collections of surface water from rivers and better production at a desalination plant in Apollo Beach. ...more

TAMPA - Phosphate giant The Mosaic Co. is planning a new divisional headquarters building in the FishHawk Ranch area, where it will consolidate 400 jobs from around the area. The company said today it has signed an agreement to buy 7.4 acres along FishHawk Boulevard from Newland Communities, the developer of FishHawk Ranch. There, it will build a 100,000-square-foot office building to house administrative and management employees working for Mosaic's phosphate and supply chain units. ...more

According to a report this week in The Tampa Tribune, the layer of soil cement that helps stabilize the walls of Tampa Bay Water's C.W. Bill Young Reservoir, in eastern Hillsborough County, is only 3 inches thick in some places. The specifications of the 15-billion-gallon, $146 million reservoir say this layer of compacted sand and cement is supposed to be 12 inches thick. Executives of the Clearwater-based regional wholesale utility say this poses no safety threat to the people in the vicinity of the reservoir. Given the recent history of Tampa Bay Water, however, this situation and the way it has been handled is a source of concern. ...more
