Regarding " 'Hyde Park Rapist' Released" (Metro, Jan. 18): I find this quite disturbing. The two psychiatrists and the parole board involved in his release should be ashamed of themselves. A person like this who has committed so many vicious rapes and attempted rapes will never be rehabilitated. There is something in his mind that will never change. This is a response to the story about the gentleman responding to the article of the woman who was airlifted to Tampa following a stabbing in Avon Park. I believe that this gentleman is misinformed on some of his facts and I would like to set the record straight. First I will say that I am a nurse at Florida Hospital and am proud to work and serve my community. Our hospitals (in Sebring, Lake Placid and Wauchula) all are capable of handling most emergencies we face in Highlands County. We are able to handle most emergencies, but apparently not this woman's. She had sustained knife wounds, which could not be handled in Highlands County and the decision was made to get her somewhere quickly where she could get her wounds taken care of. ...more

Last week at Sebring High School, my son was involved in a terrible situation. A theft took place and my son was set up by another student, who accused him of being involved. I am writing this letter to tell how wonderful the staff at Sebring High School is. When I received the news about the situation I was furious. I started to call the high school to find out exactly what happened. It was after 3 p.m. and school was out. I spoke to several personnel on campus and left a couple of messages to contact me the next day. Well, I was totally shocked when this one gentleman called me at my home at 7:30 p.m. We spoke about the situation for approximately 30 minutes, at which time, he explained to me what had happened, and he knew that I was upset with the way it was handled. ...more
