Detectives are looking for several people who together siphoned 400 gallons of diesel fuel from a Lake Alfred gas station on June 12. Deputies say a pickup truck and three large rigs pulled up to the BP station, 6600 County Road 557, and several people got out over the underground storage tanks pretending to repair the pickup, said Polk County sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers. ...more

TAMPA -- Police are searching for two men who held up a Hillsborough Avenue Shell station on Sunday. Tampa police say the two men came into the gas station at 2356 W. Hillsborough Ave. about 11:30 p.m. Sunday. One pulled a gun and ordered the clerk to open the cash register while the other robber emptied the register. ...more

SEBRING — A Sebring man remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $11,000 bond, after he was arrested, accused of paying Duck's Body Shop with bad checks to get his car back, as well as ABC Appliance for merchandise there. Raymond "Ray" Paul Hartley, 24, of 306 Swallow Ave., was booked Wednesday on charges of grand theft $300 or more but less than $5,000 and two counts of fraud - insufficient funds – obtaining goods or services in return for a worthless check $150 or more. SEBRING — The Albertson's at 3610 U.S. 27 N., in Sebring, is being sold to Publix Supermarkets, along with 48 other Florida Albertson's stores. Maria Brous, Publix spokeswoman, said Monday that it was "too early to tell" if the Sebring Albertson's would remain open as a Publix store. About 100 Albertson's employees will need to attend dedicated job fairs to become Publix employees if the grocery chain continues to keep the Sebring store open. Highlands County has three Publix stores. "It's not uncommon for us to have locations together," said Brous. "It creates more competition between (Publix) stores to gain that loyal customer." ...more
