This is in reference to Mr. Gulledge's letter of Dec.12 about Halliburton setting the price of oil. Mr. Gulledge is absolutely correct. Halliburton has nothing to do about pricing oil; they only pump the oil. Mr. Streeter is dead wrong about Halliburton setting the price of oil. I'm positive the Arabs wouldn't have an American company tell them what they can charge for oil. ...more

It isn't that Junot Diaz is the only contemporary author with literary aspirations who mashes high and low culture into an entertaining mix. It's the fact he does it so well, and also, yes, the fact he was born in the Dominican Republic and now lives in the United States, which gives him a very different set of cultural references than, say, fellow mashers Michael Chabon or Dave Eggers. ...more
