In the late 1980s Pasco County was contemplating what to do with its swelling stream of solid waste. It could create a new landfill, what people once called a garbage dump. On Monday, the Supreme Court refused to take up the appeal lodged by environmental groups that focused on a two-mile stretch of border fence in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area near Naco, Ariz. The fence, which has been built since the petition was filed, is a vital part of the Bush administration's drive to secure the border between the United States and Mexico. I guess my admittedly flippant response to the first letter Dallas Dunlop wrote pushed a few of his hot buttons and for that, I suppose, I owe him an apology. It was all meant in good fun and certainly not intended to be insulting. Having said that, I still think he totally missed my point. I never for a moment claimed that we are not in the midst of a national energy crisis; nor did I wish to create the impression that we have nothing to worry about or that we are sitting on gazillions of barrels of oil. ...more
