In response to Mr. Deeds' letter to the editor, I for one would like to ask him, if he is so interested in the happenings of his community why has he not attended any of the monthly open board meetings held at the SLID office? What a wonderful experience we had last month at the Sebring Civic Center, listening and dancing to the Highlandaires, the local big band group. It was sad, however, to see the lack of people who showed up to support this amazing group. I cannot understand how a group of this caliber is not drawing crowds at each and every performance. To see eight musicians in concert and the talent of these Highlands County musicians go un-noticed is unbelievable to say the least. ...more

This is in reference to the article of Jan. 26. For some, and probably most people in Spring Lake, this is huge news. There are many questions on our minds, and there certainly must be others here who have them as well. Why does Spring Lake Improvement District need more water retention ponds now that the flooding of private land to the east of Spring Lake has been resolved? Who will have to pay for the golf course? Will our taxes be raised to do this? If so, how much? Is the current owner of the golf course wanting to sell the golf course? Is the course making a profit? Is the property clear and free of liens? ...more
