The Patriot Act has circumvented our basic rights. I personally have experienced the hand of the government from the local to the federal level. I for one have worked my butt off to accomplish my goals through legal means. My own government has treated me with less respect than that afforded to illegal immigrants or newly arrived Cubans. I am waiting for them to knock my door down claiming I am a terrorist or I am plotting to overthrow. I would rather die than be treated with such disrespect from our overbearing, misled government! ...more

I really don't know where to start; I will try to keep it simple. This is regarding the former retired military man who wrote the "The Patraeus Report (Betray-us);" his rank, won't be mentioned because his venom towards the military and our president is only substantiated in his mind. At a time when support is desperately needed for our troops, this kind of accusation is almost criminal. However, he attained his rank is a mystery to me, as this former officer is apparently beyond understanding and needs help. With 37 years spent in reserve or active service, he has learned the word "I" usefully for his benefit. ...more

A recent letter to the editor describing some inexcusable acts of disrespect to the flag at the Highlands County Art Festival motivated me to reread a recent book titled "Flags of our Fathers," which was written about the raising of our flag during the battle for Iwo Jima, by five Marines and a sailor –– an event which is memorialized by the Marine Corps Memorial in Washington D.C. Iwo Jima is a small island in the Pacific, whose war time importance was its small airstrip, which the military desired to assist in our air attacks against Japan.
