He described their day thusly: A teacher will have breakfast and prepare for the upcoming day around 6:30 a.m. Arrive at work 7:40 to begin preparing for class. After working through lunch, the day concludes around 3:45 p.m. Before going home they are expected to meet with parents, make copies and enter grades and a few other chores. American education is on a shaky foundation when students believe they are brilliant even though they have major deficiencies in basic skills. Many high school students with high grade point averages cannot write a coherent essay, do simple grammar or computation correctly. We are not confronting these glaring gaps. We promote students with basic academic shortcomings to avoid deflating the student's self-esteem or deal with parental displeasure.
