One new middle school principal is taking over at his current school, and one is returning to the place where he spent junior high and his first years of teaching. The Hillsborough County school board appointed principals for Webb and Pierce middle schools Tuesday night. Webb's assistant principal, Marcos Murillo, was promoted to principal, and Henry Lefler, an assistant principal at Williams Middle, will come to Pierce. Murillo, 33, has worked at Webb for a year and said he wants to keep the momentum that Principal Brent McBrien established. Students are enjoying the school year, and Murillo wants to build off their enthusiasm and continue to work to improve academics. ...more

The Academy of the Holy Names hosted the Anti-Defamation League on Feb. 18 for a workshop, "Becoming an Ally: Interrupting Name-Calling and Bullying." The workshop was for 60 middle school students at two sessions. With studies indicating more than 16 percent of U.S. students have been bullied by other students during the current school term, the federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program is recommending schools address these concerns. Anti-Defamation League workshops are interactive, participatory and provide opportunities for students to develop and practice skills enabling them to respond to incidents of name-calling and bullying among their peers. The goal is to create inclusive school environments where students feel respected and challenged to succeed. ...more

The curriculum evolves and so do the methods by which it is taught. But through it all, a school is one of those institutions that define a community. Richey Elementary School, 6807 Madison St., has been part of New Port Richey for 50 years, longer if you consider classes were held there in 1957 before the building was officially completed and "opened" for the start of the 1958-'59 school year. ...more
