LAKE PLACID — The investigation into the Saturday morning shooting and homicide at 242 Phoenix Ave., Lake Placid, continued Tuesday, as Highlands County Sheriff's detectives gathered information. According to a sheriff's news release, an altercation at the Hideaway Lounge, located on U.S. 27, on the night of June 6, may have sparked the fatal shooting. "That's been confirmed in part," Sheriff's Investigator Lt. Tim Lethbridge said Tuesday. "We're involved; still investigating. We're still interviewing people who were there when it occurred." Andrew John Kalinowski, 21, of Lake Placid, was booked on charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder - premeditated. At 12:23 a.m. Saturday, Lake Placid Police officers were the first on scene at 242 Phoenix Ave., after responding to a 911 call. ...more

AVON PARK — Sheriff's investigators announced the arrest of the girlfriend of a suspect wanted in the shooting death of a Sebring man near the intersection of Garrett Road and Alabama Road in Lacey Hills on Jan. 7. Vackara Massaline, 31, of Sebring, was charged as an accessory after the fact on a charge of first-degree murder. A warrant was issued earlier in the month for the arrest of Donald Alfonso Henry, 36, of last known address: 606 Denise Ave., Sebring, in connection with the fatal shooting of Hugh Andrew Marks, 31, of Sebring. SEBRING — When it's a matter of life and death, seconds make the difference. In case of a life-threatening emergency, if a patient can reach a level one trauma center within 60 minutes (the golden hour), the odds of survival are much better, said Steve Coltharp, interim paramedic director of Highlands County Emergency Medical Services. Highlands County patients have a good chance of reaching Tampa General Hospital and some other trauma centers within that golden hour when transported by helicopter, according to Coltharp. ...more
