TAMPA PALMS - When New Tampa's only condemned house was finally demolished in April, the neighbors didn't cheer or toast with champagne. They gathered in a light rain and watched quietly as an excavator tore through eight years of frustration and headaches. Gary Glassman, a member of the city's legal staff, stood under the shelter of a giant oak and watched, too. The Board of County Commissioners held its annual employee recognition picnic on December 13, 2007, at the Hernando County Fairgrounds. Over 400 employees attended and enjoyed barbecued chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers and sausage cooked by Code Enforcement Director for Hernando County, Frank McDowell, on his monster grill. Employees brought toys to the picnic to donation to "Kay's Toys" in memory of former Utilities Director Kay Adams, who died earlier this year. BRANDON - They're the roadside equivalent of junk mail – tiny signs that advertise everything imaginable: cheap houses, health insurance, eligible singles, telemarketing jobs and even salvation. The illegal signs annoy residents, mangle lawnmowers and stymie county workers who pulled them out of the ground by the tens of thousands last year. ...more
