WINTER HAVEN –– With each passing meet, the Avon Park wrestling team takes another step up the ladder. The Red Devils continued their late season surge by finishing third in Saturday's prestigious 16-team Polk Invitational at Winter Haven High School. With the Class 1A district meet slated for Friday, Avon Park is peaking at the right time. "Overall we're pleased with our performance," said co-Red Devil coach Ed Brown. "The competition was tough and this is exactly what we needed to tune-up for the district meet. KISSIMMEE –– With the district tournament only 11 days away, the Avon Park and Sebring wrestling teams are flexing their muscles at the right time. The Red Devils went 8-1 in the 20-team, two-day tournament at Poinciana High School over the weekend to finish in third place. SEBRING — The Sebring girls basketball had to win Friday night to clinch the top seed in the upcoming Class 4A-District 10 tournament. Think they knew? The Blue Streaks held Braden River without a field goal for the first 10 minutes and got five 3-pointers from senior captain Whitney Lee en route to a 53-26 victory over the Pirates, a blowout win that clinched the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the district tourney, which tips off Jan. 28 at Booker High School in Sarasota. ...more

SEBRING –– There was no holiday hangover for many of the Heartland's prep wrestlers, as Avon Park placed third in the team competition and Sebring's Shaanan Spiegel continued his dominance on the mat at the annual Spiegel Memorial Tournament on Saturday at Sebring High School. Spiegel waltzed through the tournament with relative ease, scoring a pin three minutes into his first match against Port Charlotte's Kile Grilz and scoring a pair of technical falls en route to the gold medal in the 152-pound weight class. ...more

SEBRING — Holiday breaks are great for kids, who enjoy the time off from school and homework. Wrestling coaches, on the other hand, seem to dread this time of year, as it tests each of their athlete's dedication to the sport.
