I have to agree with the "police bashing" letter from Jesse Sours concerning law enforcement driving too fast. Mr. Dowden claims he might be headed to someone's house to help. From what I've observed with the police, they probably hurt more lives than they help, especially in Highlands County. What police are really good for is hiding behind a bush and trying to catch some poor sap going a few miles over the speed limit. Then they pounce on you, insult you, write a ticket, you pay a fine, your insurance goes up, and then they go back to sitting around with their engines running, or off to the doughnut shop. ...more

Don't you hate these election times of stress when you can't believe anybody, whether a trusted official or someone with high hopes of higher places? Reading the cherished columns in Sunday's papers would leave you wondering just who is telling the truth and who is electioneering! Two writers state the country is going to pot in a handbasket if we keep on with the "now" regime. A couple of wordy culprits think all's fine and all we need is common sense and some fine-tuning. So far, we can't help but observe that we still do have a republic here and we are a long ways from becoming a kingdom or a Muslim nation. This country will survive no matter who raises the most money or is elected in the driver's seat, but God help the man or woman who says we need to wear long gowns and face the East. Predictions ... I recently had a male individual come to my front door and present me with what was to be a free two-liter bottle of Coca-Cola. He told me he was in the area representing Hoover vacuum cleaners and he wanted to set up an appointment to give me a demonstration. When I asked, he could not present any identification connecting him with Hoover or any other appliance company. As a matter of fact, he would not show me anything bearing his name. He did show me a flash card (tells you what he is doing) in large bold letters. This is so he can show it to older people and they can read it without their glasses. This individual was seen with two other males in large white cargo-type van with glass windows all the way around. One of those individuals was also seen on foot going door to door and the other always drove the vehicle. All of the individuals were well dressed and their story was very professional sounding. ...more
