SEBRING –– Proving that experience isn't everything, Sebring's Connor Bauer ran away from the competition during the recent high school cross country season. Bauer showed that his outstanding freshman year, which included qualifying for regionals, was no fluke, as the fleet-footed sophomore cruised through the district and regional meets to qualify for the state meet in Dade City. Bauer capped his remarkable season by finishing 25th at the Class 2A state meet with a time of 16 minutes, 52 seconds, which was his second-fastest time of the season. For his ability and accomplishments, Bauer has been selected Highlands Today's 2007 All-Heartland Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. "Connor is a natural runner with a lot of ability and combines that with an outstanding work ethic," said Sebring veteran coach Jeff Shoemaker. "He is a dedicated athlete, very coachable and always gives his best effort. ...more

A story in today's Highlands Today shows an example of local parents doing an extremely smart thing: investing early in their children's college education. We hope all Floridians find someway to save for such expenses. Andrew and Susan Bible made college funding for their four children a priority. They couldn't sink a lot of cash up front into a plan that locks in tuition rates at Florida public universities for their children, ages 3 through 9, but they could do it in installments. For $200 per month, they are putting money away to help ensure a bright future for their children. And if their children go to colleges or universities outside the state, although the tuition won't be locked in, the money still is available. ...more

TAMPA — The Sebring girls cross country team showed what solidarity can do for a team, as they finished fifth at the Class 3A-District 5 district meet on Thursday at Lake Park in Tampa. Rough course conditions took its toll on the boys team, who gave a good performance but came up short, finishing in seventh place — one spot out of moving on to regionals. "The boys did what they could do," Sebring coach Jeff Shoemaker said. "I have no complaints on how they performed. It just wasn't good enough to make it this time." The top six teams advance to the Region 3 meet, which will take place on Nov. 9 at Estero Community Park in Ft. Myers. ...more

Dear Abby: I recently began attending a private high school in Manhattan, N.Y., on scholarship. The commute can take two hours - or more - each way. In the beginning, I was willing to accept the challenge and make it work. However, as the long days continue, I'm wondering whether it's worth it. ...more
