LAKE PLACID — "You don't train cats. They train you." That's how Judy Eastwood, the president of the American Cat Fanciers Association, summarized the experiences of dozens of cat breeders who assembled at the American Legion Post 25 Saturday and Sunday. Approximately, 50 contestants and more than 130 cats from places as far as Wisconsin packed the post for the "Mardi Gras Cat Show." LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid Board of Realtors recently sponsored an old-fashioned dance-a-thon at the Lake Placid American Legion Post 25 to benefit two local not-for-profit organizations – the Humane Society of Highlands County and the Lake Placid Miracle League. The dance was held to benefit the Humane Society of Highlands County, whose mission is to provide shelter, medical care and adoption services to lost, homeless and unwanted companion animals, and the Lake Placid Miracle League, a newly organized youth baseball league for physically and mentally hindered youths who are paired with "Buddies" who help the athletes take the field and cope with the challenges of playing the game. Themed in the 60's and 70's, the 261 party-goers entered a long-ago past complete with fiber-optic lamps, peace beads, 45 rpm record decorations, disco ball, and hula hoops. Many guests reached into the back of their closets, or their parents' closet, and looked as if they could have just stepped off the Partridge Family bus. ...more

First we had a fundraiser dinner, then a dinner theater bus trip and then watched as many of our good members and friends stepped forward with donations and physical help. We then contacted many churches and service groups hoping they would also adopt a girl's bedroom or bath. ...more
