The selection of Sarah Palin as a vice presidential running mate is a victory for women, and rightfully so. However, there are serious questions about her beliefs that can cause concerns in our secular society. When a politician feels that his or her religious beliefs should become the law, then we should closely examine those beliefs and question whether they should be allowed to overthrow our constitution. That constitution emphatically states that there should be freedom for all to practice their own religious beliefs, but not be forced to follow those of others. Both parties have stated that family matters should not be part of a political campaign, and there is some validity in that. ...more

Picking Palin to be his running mate was to McCain the perfect political choice, but using her family's experience in order to gain the fundamentalist votes will not be good for the fundamentalist cause, as it blows up their theory that teaching abstinence is the solution to teen pregnancies. Before Palin became a political pawn, women were supposed to stay home and teach their children family values, even to the point of home schooling. We are now being told that a working mother can have it all as long as she doesn't resort to abortions (and can afford to have others take up her duties at home.) ...more

Support Staff Mandatory In response to former state Rep. Sandra Murman's article "Making The Best Of Bad Times" (Other Views, April 26), I find her argument regarding the allocation of school resources flawed. She claims that "not every dollar spent on education has the same impact on student achievement." She further states that money spent on transportation, student nutrition or maintenance, for example, does not have the same impact on student's learning as buying a science book would have. ...more
