Sharks devour short-handed Panthers, 55-8

Facing a team the stature of Nature Coast on the road is a daunting task. Doing it short-handed makes it a nightmare.
That's what Eustis was up against on Friday. The Sharks simply overpowered the Panthers on both sides of the ball, rolling to a 55-8 triumph.
The win kept Nature Coast in the 3A-6 race for second at 4-2; the Sharks are 6-2 overall. Eustis slipped to 1-8 overall, 1-5 in the district.
Tevin Drake was the catalyst for Nature Coast, but he got plenty of assistance from quarterback C.J. Baker and receiver Jamel Byrd.
Drake shredded the Panther defense, gaining 213 yards on 25 carries and scoring three touchdowns, while Baker completed 6-of-11 passes for 143 yards and three TDs, two of them to Byrd covering 53 and 7 yards.
"We're missing a lot of players," said Eustis' first-year Head Coach Bill Larkin. "Three of our offensive linemen are out and our whole offensive backfield except for our quarterback is out. I was disappointed with our defense. They were out there a lot but, well it's been a frustrating year for them."
The Eustis defense has been the team's strength all season, but against Nature Coast it simply wore down.
The Panthers did collect three first-half turnovers, and they forced the Sharks to punt on their first two possessions of the second half. But by that time they were trailing 28-8; Nature Coast would score touchdowns on its last four possessions, two of them on runs of 41 and 40 yards by Drake.
Baker's early strikes - he connected with Anthony Carlucci on a 10-yard TD pass for the Sharks' first score and hit Byrd on a 53-yard bomb early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 21-0 - were too much to overcome for Eustis. Containing Drake, who also scored on a 12-yard run in the opening quarter, figured to be tough enough, but add the vertical attack into the equation and the Panthers could not cope.
"They were bringing everyone up into the box," explained NCT Head Coach Mark Lee. "We saw things on film that we could attack. C.J. does great taking advantage of things like that."
The only problem the Sharks faced was themselves. They did not punt in the first half and had only two in the game, but those three first-half turnovers could have proved costly.
NCT's defense was equal to the task. The Shark defenders surrendered just two big plays, both of them long passes.
The first was a 65-yard completion from Kelsei Brown to David Webber, but he lost the ball on a fumble that was recovered by Isaac Bailey. The second was a 70-yard strike from Brown to Javon Nelson on a streak route that trimmed the Nature Coast to 28-8 in the third quarter.
But that was it. Eustis was limited to 97 rushing yards on 35 attempts and 232 total yards, while surrendering four turnovers. Bailey had an interception to go with his fumble recovery, and Brenton Nuby picked off two of Brown's passes.
NC's offense gained 415 yards rushing and another 143 passing for 558 yards total. Bailey also had 69 rushing yards on four carries, with Carlucci contributing 56 on six attempts and Luke McCarthy adding 55 on eight tries, with one TD. Byrd caught four passes for 91 yards including the two TDs.
Now comes a playoff showdown at Hernando, which defeated Citrus 46-0 Friday. Should Hernando win, it will qualify in 3A-6; should Nature Coast get the victory and Crystal River, which plays at Tavares, also wins, it could result in a three-way tie for second and force a playoff between those three teams.
