Florida Senior Games registration now open
TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Senior Games State Championships is two months away and prospective athletes have a variety of ways to sign up for the 18th annual State Championships, to be held in Cape Coral on Dec. 5-13.
It has never been easier for athletes to register for competition in the state's only Senior-oriented Olympic-style Sports Festival.
The easiest way is for athletes to visit www.flasports.com and register online. Once athletes create an account, future registrations will be a snap. Once contact information is provided, the Florida Sports Foundation will be able to keep athletes posted of the latest news in email correspondence.
Another option is to download registration information from www.flasports.com and send it back to the Florida Sports Foundation. Each Senior Games sport has information posted at www.flasports.com in pdf files.
Florida Senior Games State Championships registration books have been mailed out to athletes. Senior athletes who have qualified at a 2009 Local Games event or participated in previous Senior Games events are on the FSF mailing list and will receive a registration book. To receive a 2009 Florida Senior Games State Championships Registration Book in the mail, please contact the FSF by calling toll free 1-866-FL-GAMES or send an email to games@flasports.com.
The deadline for applications to be received at the Florida Sports Foundation office in Tallahassee is Monday, Nov. 16. Online registration deadline is Friday, Nov. 20. Entry fees also vary by sport.
New for the 2009 Games are some events where athletes younger than 50 may compete alongside Senior Athletes in their own age groups. At the Powerlifting competition, to be held Saturday, Dec. 5, athletes 40 and older are invited to participate. Divisions will be contested in accordance with Senior Games five-year increments starting with age 40-44.
The 5K Road Race, to be held on Saturday, Dec. 12 at Rotary Park in Cape Coral, is an intergenerational event with athletes of all age invited to participate. Athletes 49 and younger will be categorized at Florida's Sunshine State Games athletes. The 5K Road Race will accept on-site registration the day of the event.
