Challenger K-8 (4-5) junior varsity squad inched closer to .500 plateau by solving host Fox Chapel in middle school boys basketball, 31-22.
With the Tigers in the lead at the beginning of the second quarter, 3-2, the Gators stepped it up with a 3-point field goal by Kyle Kilbourne. Baskets by Tyler Toth, Roscilio Ryan and Jay Burkes swelled the halftime lead to 11-5.
Challenger's Jeff Laing assessed the proceedings saying, "I'm very pleased with their playing, and over the season they worked hard to get better."
Fox Chapel's JV skipper David Schlechter added, "We did a good job, and we never gave up."
In the nightcap, Fox Chapel claimed a 26-15 nod to climb to 8-1 overall.
Joey Stokes from Fox Chapel sank a 3-point field goal while Brandon Paino and Sam Mazzia added a field goal apiece to stake the Tigers to an early 8-5 cushion.
Fox Chapel broke open a close game in the second half on the shooting of Joey Stokes, who tallied six points while Mazzia chipped in four markers.
Coach Schlechter, filling in for varsity coach Mike Adams, said "With only one loss, it still keeps the varsity team in first place and they feel really good about winning this game." From the other sideline, Coach Laing was not disappointed with the effort, "We still played a great game, I'm just proud of the team and what they did out there."
