Central stays on top in Solomon Classic

Now here's the kind of quandary any coach would love to solve.
Which of his athletes deserves the tag as best of the bunch in a tournament?
Certainly Central wrestling coach Roy Reyes had his choices in finding an answer to that question. That's because the Bears dominated their own Solomon Classic Dual Meet Tournament Saturday, winning all five of their contests.
Three teams -- Celebration, Harmony and Dunnellon -- tied at 3-2 for the next best record, with Celebration emerging with the second-place trophy. Tampa-Berkeley Prep was 1-4 and Hudson was winless in its five meets.
"We got our win," Reyes said after the trophy presentation. "It's huge. You always want to win your own tournament. We got to wrestle and win at home, something you don't get to do too often."
The tournament schedule means teams are on the road far more often than they're at home, which made this -- Central's second-consecutive Solomon title -- that much more meaningful.
But it also showed how much the Bears have improved since their fourth-place finish two weeks earlier at the Berkeley Invitational.
"It's just a matter of keeping good intensity," Reyes added. "We've made some good strides, but we're still not where we want to be yet."
As for Central's top wrestler award (each team selected its own), Reyes and his staff could have chosen any of four wrestlers: Josh Marquez at 103 pounds, Anthony Marquez at 112, Robbie Monsegur at 119 or David Supple at 125. All were unbeaten for the tournament.
Monsegur emerged as the Bears' winner, collecting one pin in his five matches. Anthony Marquez, Supple and Luke Walton (who was 4-1 for the day) had three pins apiece to lead the Bears in that category.
Going into the tournament, Reyes was concerned in particular with Harmony and Celebration, adding that Dunnellon "always has a lot of good athletes."
But in the final analysis, his concern was heavily outweighed by the final results.
The closest score in any of the five meets came against Dunnellon, a 45-26 victory for Central.
The Bears handled Harmony, its final opponent in the tournament, 55-17, and bested Celebration, 49-21.
The matches against Berkeley Prep (60-15) and Hudson (69-9) were one-sided.
The dual-meet format was an alteration from previous Solomon tournaments.
"We got the win even though we changed the format," Reyes said. "I liked this format better."
While it may have seemed as if Central was in control by the time it met Harmony in its final dual, a loss would have catapulted Harmony to the title.
"I thought Harmony (would be tough), just because they finished second last year and they'd be hungry," Reyes said. "I didn't really know what Celebration had, but their teams are always good."
Eleven match wins -- five on pins and two on forfeits -- in the 14 matches against Harmony meant one thing for certain: the opposition may have been good, but not good enough to keep Central from collecting the top prize on its home floor.
