Powell put on the press Thursday night, and J.D. Floyd simply didn't have an answer.
The varsity Lady Panthers recorded 27 steals as they improved to 4-0 on the season in a 35-11 victory in the Challenger K-8 gym.
"The first quarter got a little sloppy," Powell Head Coach Laura Fowle said. "Then we got it together a little bit better. Lots of turnovers, lots of steals. That's middle school basketball, though."
The starting backcourt of Kaitlyn Glynn and Allison Amodie provided the spark, combing for 20 points and 15 steals.
Glynn, who had game-highs of 14 points and nine steals to go along with five rebounds and three assists, had six points in the second quarter as the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Dolphins (0-3), 16-0.
From there Powell cruised, though Floyd received a solid effort out of Wilena Little. She posted nine points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
"I think they have improved," said Floyd Head Coach Ricardo Jaquez, whose varsity squad scored in double figures for the first time this season. "Considering the first two games, they've done a big improvement all the way around.
"A lot of these girls, it's really their first year playing basketball. I appreciate their effort. We've still got a lot of work to do, but I see improvement every game. Hopefully next game will be even better. We've got to work a little harder."
Jaquez noted that his girls simply couldn't counter the Powell press. In addition to the work of Glynn and Amodie, Racquail Mobley tallied six steals and Raquel Mobley four off the bench.
Another reserve, Katie Marty, hauled in 11 boards and chipped in a block. Kelsey Jarman had five points and four rebounds.
"They're coming along," Fowle said. "I think (the county) is pretty competitive this year. A lot of teams are pretty close. Nobody is really blowing anybody out, so it should be interesting."
JV: Powell pulls away
Powell also captured a tight-till-the-end JV game, 28-15, with a tremendous fourth-quarter effort.
The score was knotted up at 10 going into halftime and Floyd (0-3) took a 13-12 advantage late in the third quarter.
However, the Lady Panthers (3-1) scored twice in the final minute to go back in front and exploded for 12 points in the last period while limiting the Lady Dolphins to just one field goal.
Tyshea McRae, Brittany Burkhamer and Michelle Holtje all tied for Powell's high-scoring honors with six points. Kirstyn Morris paced Floyd with six, as well.
"We started off a little rough," Powell JV coach LeeAnn Loffler said. "I think we just tried to get a feel for the court I guess. Then we kind of brought it together in the second half and started playing more like a team.
"I tried to put different players in, trying a different group of girls; give other players extra time on the court. Once they began to gel, it came together."
