Trying to rebound from week one's mistake-riddled defeat to Ridgewood, Friday night could barely have started worse for Hudson High quarterback Zack Wynn.
While hosting Hernando High (1-1), the Leopards' James Stephens picked off Wynn on the second overall play from scrimmage and bumped the talented signal callers' interception total to five - one more than all of 2007.
After Hernando kicker Josh Harvey pounded an impressive 43-yard field goal to capitalize on Wynn's error and give the Leopards an early 3-0 lead, the junior quarterback wasted no time to settle into form.
Wynn and tailback Dylan Luke quickly marched the Cobras downfield on an 80-yard scoring drive, capped by a 69-yard touchdown strike to receiver Dylan Buono, to kick-start the 33-3 Hudson rout.
Wynn would eventually finish 12-for-21 passing for 270 yards and three scores while spreading the ball to six different targets. Buono hauled in four of the tosses for 161 yards and two trips to the end zone.
"Anything and everything," Wynn said afterward when asked what was working differently from last week's loss. "The offensive line was clicking, my receivers got open, and our timing was on - everything. We just had to forget about last week."
Delaine goes down
On the Hernando sideline, the Leopards' run-heavy offense was dealt a major blow before it could get in groove when star running back Alvin Delaine limped off the field late in the first quarter.
Delaine would return to start the second half, but was used sparingly. Coming off a career night last week, he was limited to only nine carries for 16 yards.
After taking the 7-3 lead, Hudson (1-1) took advantage of the first of two Leopard's lost fumbles and scored again on a Wynn-to-Buono, 24-yard hook up.
An array of Hernando players were called on to run from the backfield, but the Cobra defensive front was up to task. The Leopards finished with a combined 97 yards of total offense, compared to Hudson's 361.
Hudson sacked starting quarterback Kall Daniel and backup Josh Ross four times and the Cobras notched a special team's touchdown when lineman Justin Pennington scooped up an arrant punt snap to close out the scoring.
Hernando stays on the road - and in Pasco County - next week, traveling to take on 2-0 Gulf High. Hudson is on its bye week.
OTHER GAME NOTES: Hernando safety Cory Thomas nabbed a second-half interception off of Wynn to stop a fourth-quarter drive ... Hudson fullback Hunter Newton scored twice - once rushing and once receiving.
