Five innings is all it took for Spring Hill to wrap-up the Senior Boys (age 14) All-Stars District 6 Tournament at Wesley Chapel District Park Sunday afternoon.
Winners by the 10-run rule against the Sumter All-Stars ,18-8, Spring Hill advances to the state championships to be held in Marianna.
Sumter upset Spring Hill on Saturday, 13-12, forcing Spring Hill to return to East Pasco County and face the winner of Sumter versus Hernando earlier that day.
Sumter eliminated Hernando, 7-6, setting up a winner-take-all finale.
Tone setter
Spring Hill set the tone for the title game in the first inning when they nearly batted around the order - twice - scoring 13 runs off of seven hits including back-to-back-to-back homeruns, the first being a grand-slam by Joey Asquith followed by solo shots from Thomas Tambasco and Louis Coliacomo. Coliacomo's first hit of the inning was a triple. The team also drew four walks and Sumter committed two errors in the 13-run first inning.
J.T. Simpson went 52/3 on the mound for Spring Hill giving up seven runs on nine hits, striking out two and allowing three walks. Sumter pitching gave up 18 runs on 16 hits -- including three homers, a triple, three doubles and four walks.
"We played that team (Sumter) three times to get here," said Spring Hill Head Coach Mike Sollazzo. "It was pretty tough. They (Spring Hill) were brought to Earth yesterday losing 13-12 and they woke up this morning, obviously, you saw how we hit today.
"We got homerun hitters - these kids can hit homeruns any given moment," Sollazzo continued. "And we got table setters. If my pitching holds up, the way my bats are, we can bring a state title home to Spring Hill."
Simpson will get the first start in Marianna.
"J.T Simpson is my number one pitcher," said Sollazzo. "He's the best 14-year-old pitcher in Hernando County, hands above everybody. He's a polished professional."
When asked to describe his first-inning grand-slam, ninth-batter Joey Asquith merely replied, "I kept my eye on it, loaded and exploded."
