There's something to be said for consistency, which is of course what the North Suncoast Junior Golf Association's tournament season is based upon. Simply put, the more tournaments you play and finish well in, the more points you'll accumulate and the better you'll do overall.
At Tuesday's NSJGA event at The Dunes Golf Club, the second competed on the tour this year, the competitive nature of these tournaments was evident. In only two of the eight age divisions -- the boys 10-12 years intermediate and the girls 10-18 years intermediate -- were winners able to repeat.
Spring Hill resident Ben Cash won the boys 10-12 intermediate for the second-straight week with a 9-hole 52, while Summer Moser of Lutz was a repeat winner in the 10-18 girls intermediate with a 47.
Last week's winner in the girls 10-18 advanced division, Megan Berube, also of Spring Hill, turned in a solid performance, but Brianna Carlson of Inverness took top honors with an 18-hole 74, topping both Berube and Brooksville's Lauren Shuford, who tied for second each with a 78 (Berube won the tiebreaker).
In the boys 16-18 advanced division, none of last week's top scorers finished in the top three. Inverness' Zack Stanley shot a 75 to take top honors this week (18 holes), followed by Justin Grant of Ocala (76) and Jon Kopsell of Hudson (77).
The boys 13-15 advanced division proved even more competitive, with two strokes separating the top four finishers.
Mark Giardino of Homosassa got the win behind an 18-hole 76, with Crystal River's Andrew Dyakon a stroke behind with a 77. Matt Camurra and Gary Buffington, both from Tampa, tied for third, each with a 78. Giardino was first at last week's NSJGA opener.
The top two finishers last week in the boys 10-12 advanced, Micah Sugioka of Beverly Hills and Dylan Nelson of Inverness, were among the leaders this week, but the division title went to Ryan Hicks of Clearwater with a 59 (12 holes). Nelson took second again this week with a 61 while Sugioka was third with a 63.
In the boys and girls 8-9 division, Devon Rabeiro of Tampa was the champ with a 30 (seven holes). There was a three-way tie at 36 for second, the tiebreaker won by Brooksville's Joe Jackson. Cade Crosby of Brooksville and Cameron Wyckhoff of Homosassa finished tied for third (Wyckhoff was second last week).
Next up on the NSJGA schedule is a tournament on July 8 at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville.
