BROOKSVILLE - The Fox Chapel varsity (8th grade) basketball team earned its first win of the season Monday night at Powell by trimming host and winless J.D. Floyd, 44-21.

The Tigers overcame a sluggish first half, leading by only one at the break, 14-13, and they found themselves in dogfight. Standing toe-to-toe with its opponent, Fox Chapel had to increase its intensity.

Tiger starter Jesse Mazzia started things off in the second half with one of his two three-pointers on the night, increasing the lead to 17-14.

Joe Stokes grabbed a rebound with 4:40 left in the third quarter and put it back up for two of his eight in the quarter and 10 on the night.

Not to be outdone, Joe Fisher grabbed a rebound and scored at the 4:17 mark, making the score 21-13 and the Tigers were off. Fox Chapel never looked back improving to 1-2.

The Tigers were led by Joe Stokes and Mazzia with 10 points each, while the Dolphins' Steven Powell led his team with seven points on two three-pointers and a free throw.

Fox Chapel Head Coach David Schlechter commented. "I think we expected to win. The second half we played aggressive, which I've been trying to get them to do. We definitely have some talented kids, but it's a challenge getting them to stay aggressive. That was the goal, and we didn't do that the first half."

"The kids started off wonderfully," said J.D. Floyd Head Coach Adam Wolford. "It's real difficult because this is the very first year they've ever had playing. We have an amazing shooter named Steven Powell; he hit a couple of three-pointers early. We were running up and down the court, beating their press in the beginning.

"We got up on them quick, we were up 10-2, but then, we only have eight guys on the team and we started to get tired."
