Hernando: A Case of Good News, Bad News

For second-year Hernando High wrestling Head Coach Joe McLain, his team's efforts in this past weekend's Gulf Duals Wrestling Tournament turned out to be a good workout.
While the Leopards finished the two-day event with a 2-3 record, McLain said he did have some Leopards show what they have and what others may need to work on.
The Leopards went 1-3 in the main part of the tournament before solving Tampa Prep in a match outside of the tournament. But coach McLain said that for the weekend, he was forced to call up six wrestlers from the junior varsity to have a full team.
"Pretty much all of are lower weights were JV wrestlers and we had to do it because in a dual meet format," indicated Coach McLain. "You really have to have a full squad to compete."
Hernando began the tournament well Friday night when they beat Wesley Chapel 72-10 in their first match before losing to River Ridge 45-33.
Then on Saturday, the Leopards lost 48-29 to North Marion and 48-24 to Gulf before winning against Tampa Prep. Combined, the Leopards went 38-32 with 18 pins.
In their five matches, five wrestlers went through unbeaten: Brandon Gunderson at 103 pounds, Daniel Pritz at 135, his brother Zach at 140 pounds, James Davidson at 171 and George Smith at 189 pounds.
With their record, McLain said his team really didn't preform as well as he hoped they would.
"There's no excuses, we really didn't come out and execute like we should have," said McLain.
Despite that, McLain added that some members of his team did well over the weekend.
"Well, both Daniel and Zach (Pritz) did well as did James (Davidson) and George (Smith)."
McLain said his team now should have the holidays off until Jan. 3 when they compete in the Clay Rotary Invitational.
"Hopefully, we'll have our junior and senior wrestlers step up when the districts come around," McLain said. "But we still have a ways to go until then."
