Three years ago when the Springstead Eagles won their first Gulf Duals Wrestling Tournament, it gave Eagle coach Eric Swensen his first title at the school.
But this past weekend, Swensen and his team showed how far it has come as it rolled over every opponent it faced, beating Citrus 53-12 to take the tournament title with a perfect 6-0 record.
The Eagles had eight wrestlers go unbeaten in the six matches as they beat their opponents by an average score of 62-10.
"I didn't think it would go quite like this," said Swensen late Saturday. "We had to forfeit at heavyweight in every match, but I think our big guys dominated tonight."
With the 20-team tournament broken up into four five-team brackets, the Eagles won their four bracket matches with ease.
They beat Lecanto 58-15, Hudson 71-6, Zephyrhills 73-9 and Tampa Leto 76-6 to win Bracket A.
Then in the semifinals, Springstead kept up its domination as it easily beat Belleview, the winner from Bracket B, 54-17, to advance to the final.
In the championship match, Springstead took on Citrus, who they defeated last year in the semifinals, 51-11.
But Saturday night, led by pins from Shawn Landgraff, Jessey Lorentsen and two injury defaults, the Eagles won 56-9.
Springstead wrestlers who went unbeaten in the six-match, two-day event were 103-pound Richie Bliss, 145-pound Landgraff, 152-pound Thomas Ellerbee, 160-pound Thad Klenovich, 171-pound Lorentsen, 189-pound Scott Wern and 215-pound Kenny Cox.
When asked if he could pick out one or two wrestlers who did well over the weekend, Swensen did not want to do it.
"I don't want to single out one guy because it was a total team effort," Swensen said. "But I think my heavier guys really controlled their matches. It wasn't just one guy, it was the Springstead team."
An example of how much the Eagles dominated their matches: overall Springstead finished the tournament with a record of 72-6 with 41 pins.
The Eagles now have the next two weeks off before they host their own tournament, the Springstead Duals, on Jan. 3. And Swensen says that his team will face some very stiff competition.
"We have Bradenton Manatee, Lake Gibson, Durant and Columbia," Swensen said. "So we're going to have our hands full."
