Madyson Custom Home Builders got home runs in the sixth inning from Billy Shiver and Eric Stocker to defeat Coney Island, 16-12, Thursday night to win the City of Brooksville Recreation Department championship.
Madyson (17-5) defeated top-seeded Coney Island (17-3) two nights in a row to at Jerome Brown Community Center to take the title.
"This is our first year playing softball in about four or five years," said Pasha Darby, team captain. "Four of us all played baseball together at Central in the early '90s. It was just a combination of us and some friends of friends that we put a team together."
After losing its first game of the tournament to AMAX, 27-16, on Tuesday, Madyson came back through the loser's bracket to win four straight games.
The first win over Patrick's Produce was a forfeit and then Madyson beat Jimmy Diablos, 16-12, and then AMAX, 21-11, to set up the finals with Coney Island.
Wednesday night, Scott Schuster and Stocker each had two home runs to lead Madyson to a 31-19 win over Coney Island, setting up Thursday's winner-take-all final.
Thursday night, Madyson overcame an early 8-4 deficit by scoring 12 runs in the last three innings.
In a seven-run fifth inning, Madyson was led by a two-run homer by Stocker and later a three-run home run by Shiver.
"It feels great to win," Darby said. "The first game we played in this tournament we didn't hit the ball, but after that we just began to hit. And the funny thing was that we lost to Coney Island the two times we played them in the regular season."
