BROOKSVILLE - A sex offender being sought because he wasn't where he was supposed to be Tuesday was found a day later by showing up where he was supposed to — in court.Published: November 29, 2012
Dewayne Royce McLendon Sr., 52, wanted for failing to comply with his obligations as a sex offender after he disappeared from his Spring Hill home, showed up for a court date Wednesday stemming from various drug charges in July.
On July 12, he was charged with multiple drug offenses including possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of a harmful new legend drug without a prescription.
A bailiff, who was aware of the warrant out for McLendon's arrest, took him into custody, where he is being held on a $20,000 bond.
McLendon was found guilty of sexual battery with the threat to use a deadly weapon and kidnapping in 1998.
On Tuesday, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office reported that he and his roommate, Donna Altamuro, were discovered to have vacated their former residence at 13119 Linden Drive — a violation of his requirements as a sex offender.
Deputies reported they suspected he and Altamuro were somewhere in Brooksville and had advised residents not to approach him, as he was believed to be aggressive and possibly dangerous based upon his past history.
