Mosquito control funding passes, sensitive lands tax falls by wayside

Two countywide referendums experienced different fates during Tuesday's election.

The referendum dealing with funding mosquito control easily passed voter scrutiny by a margin of 29,472 votes, or 53,892 to 24,420.

Passage of the referendum means a property with a taxable value of $100,000 will pay roughly $10 per year if the full amount is levied to help fund mosquito control.

The second referendum dealing with a tax to help preserve sensitive lands in Hernando County failed to gain voters approval by roughly 3 percentage points, or 39,836 no votes to 37,494 yes votes.

The no vote means the program could come to a halt if the county cannot come up with an alternate funding source for the program.
