Time to changePublished: December 29, 2012
I am a life long, die hard Republican. I have always believed that the policies of the Republican Party are what have made this country great. But, I think the Republican Party must now change its' tactics.
With the results of the recent presidential election, it is quite apparent that the philosophy of this country's majority has changed. The idea of working for the "American Dream" has changed to "Give me the American Dream."
The minority groups – African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and the young people have banded together with the liberals to form the new majority of this country. Their idea is not to work and earn the American dream, but to have it handed to them by the government.
So, I am suggesting to the Republicans in Congress to let President Obama do what he wants.
Let the president and the Democrats have everything they ask for in regards to tax increases, spending, etc.
One of two things will happen. The president's policies will work, and get our country back on top again. A good thing for us, but no one really believes that would happen. Or, his policies will sink this country deeper into disaster, and probably ensure future Republican victories.
But, the one thing we can't do is to continue this foolish fighting by the two parties. Neither party can do anything effective, it's a farce. Our government has become a laughing stock to the world.
So, to our Republican Senators and Representatives, I urge you to let the Democrats have their way in Congress. Let the country see just what their foolish ideas will do to us.
If we think we're headed to a "fiscal cliff" now, wait until the country sees the abyss we will be in then!

Leave Constitution alone
In response to Angel Castillo in Thursday's column in Hernando Today regarding "It's time to amend gun rights."
In this column Castillo recommends doing away with the Second Amendment. He states that only law enforcement agents and members of the armed forces may have and use firearms.
That is a very "pie in the sky" attitude as we all know that there are over 3 million "Legal" guns in the United States; so what do we do about them?
One of the reasons Japan did not invade the United States after Pearl Harbor is due to the fact they knew almost all citizens were armed! But let's follow his thinking. If he wants to do away with the Second Amendment, let's not stop there. How about the First Amendment? This stupid "Freedom of speech and press" is really outdated, let's do what Obama is getting to and regulate the press. Oh wait, he is already doing that.
So throw out that one. How about the Fourth Amendment, Illegal search and seizures? If only the law has guns they must know what they are doing so why wait for a warrant? They would only break down illegal doors, right? And how about Sixth Amendment, the right to a "speedy trial?" Nobody gets one anyway; some languish in jail for years; so that one needs to go. I could go on and on but hopefully you get the idea. Leave my constitution alone!
