SPRING HILL - A 40-year-old Brooksville man remains incapacitated after colliding with an SUV on U.S. 19 Wednesday that failed to yield for a right-of-way, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Three witnesses saw an SUV operated by Benny Lowery Dawkins, 65, of Spring Hill, and passenger Patricia Sue Wooten, 71, of Spring Hill, pull out onto U.S. 19 facing Pacific Avenue.

Proceeding down U.S. 19 on a scooter was Eric Jason Haight, who grounded the scooter in an attempt to avoid colliding with the SUV. The scooter continued without Haight and was struck by the front end of the SUV, and the scooter came to a stop on its side approximately 12 feet from the crash.

Haight continued to travel over the road toward the SUV, and the front tire drove over Haight and he remained under the left side of the vehicle. Neighborhood bystanders said it would be a miracle if the motorist survived the crash.

Prior to investigators arriving, Haight was transported via bayflight to Regional Medical Center – Bayonet Point.

Haight was not wearing a helmet and his driver's license had been expired more than six months. A server's black book, lighter, stick of deodorant and hooded sweatshirt lay next to a wrecked scooter in the middle of U.S. 19.

Dawkins failed to provide proof of insurance.
