BROOKSVILLE - It's going to cost people who bring multiple dogs to Pine Island more money to get in the gates.

County commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved a new price schedule of $7 per vehicle with one dog and $3 for each additional canine.

Previously, it was $7 per car and pet owners were allowed to bring an unlimited number of dogs.

The fee hike was part of the board's correspondence to note section on the agenda and was approved as part of a package. There was no discussion and no audience comment.

County Commissioner Dave Russell said the new rates will go into effect in the next several weeks, giving time to educate the public.

Land Services Director Ron Pianta said he wants to be sure pet owners have plenty of time to become aware of the revised fees and is shooting for sometime after the holidays.

The new fees came about after residents at a previous meeting had suggested tweaking the fees to create a level playing field for all who visit Bark Island. Some people, they said, brought up to four or five dogs per car and paid the same as single-dog occupants.

Commissioners told Hernando Today they too believed it was more equitable for people to pay by dog rather than by vehicle.

The extra money will go into parks department coffers.

Bark Island is a seasonal recreation program offered at Pine Island Park starting the first weekend after Labor Day and ending in mid-March, prior to spring break. Dog lovers can bring their pooches from 7:30 to 9: 30 a.m.

It is held every other Saturday.

Also at Tuesday's meeting:

He expects more complaints during the upcoming holiday season, which is typical for this time of year.

When Republic became the sole franchise hauler for Hernando County at the start of the year, it was inundated with customer complaints of missed pickups.

Transportation Director Brian Malmberg said he would now submit the project list to the proper agency for consideration.

The money can be used to help with economic development or tourism.
