Your everyday heroes

These kinds of heroes don't have X-ray vision or the ability to run faster than a speeding bullet, but that doesn't stop them from helping people.

Friday morning about 10 volunteers from Lowe's of Spring Hill and The Arc Nature Coast took part in Lowe's Heroes, a project put on by Lowe's each year that assists local organizations with various kinds of projects.

This year's recipient was The Arc Nature Coast, an organization that provides support for more than 180 people with disabilities and their families. The project consisted of remodeling the backyard and porch of one of Nature Coast's houses and providing its residents with new furniture and an outdoor grill.

"It's so the residents can have a nice place to sit outdoors," said Nancy Stubbs, development director.

Stubbs said Lowe's contacted her for the third year in a row and asked if Nature Coast needed any help with a certain project. Stubbs chose the house her brother shares with two roommates, all of which are developmentally disabled.

"We are very fortunate because we wouldn't be able to do this on our own," she said. "It's really special that Lowe's is here to do this. All these people are volunteering their own time and not making any money off of it."

Stubbs said she enjoys doing the work while also helping her brother and the community.

"The people we serve are very important to me," Stubbs said. "They deserve a nice place to enjoy their time just like all of us, and they aren't in the position to do those things for themselves."

First time Lowe's Heroes volunteer Delores Arcuri said she was excited that she was finally able to participate in a Lowe's Heroes project.

"It's the neighborly thing to do anytime someone needs help," Arcuri said. "I think this will make a big difference for them."

Volunteer Jason Underwood, who organized most of the landscaping for the day, said he was glad to make a difference in people's lives.

"I like the idea of helping somebody out, and I don't care if people see me do it or not," he said. "I just like to do it."
