A crew from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission burned the area on the west side of U.S. 19 from Atlanta Avenue north to Centralia Road. Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area Manager Chad Allison said the section hadn't been burned for 5 or 6 years and the sand hill habitat typically needs to be burned every 3-4 years to keep the canopy open for the plants and wildlife that depend on that environment.
