A man was arrested Friday after deputies pulled him over going 86 mph in a 45 mph zone along Mariner Boulevard, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.
Donald Lewis Fort, 26, was traveling southbound in a white Saturn along Mariner shortly after 10 a.m. before turning east on Shafton Road, deputies said.
He jumped out of the vehicle, which continued to roll westbound along Oneida Street, according to an arrest report.
Fort fled the scene on foot and deputies set up a perimeter, the report showed.
He eventually emerged from the woods and said he was speeding because he was being chased by someone in a black Chevrolet Tahoe, deputies said.
Fort later said he tried to evade law enforcement because he failed to appear for a court hearing, according to the report.
A background check showed Fort has had his driver's license suspended nine times, deputies said.
He was transported to the Hernando County Jail. His bond was set at $6,000.
