Sunday morning is one of the best days of the week. While eating a wonderful breakfast, I read the local papers. Reading the Voices section is like that sore in your mouth you keep running your tongue over or that scab somewhere on your body that you know you should leave alone but you keep picking and picking until it starts to bleed.
I read the words of John Reiniers and Donald Myers and those great letters to the editor from Russ Colombo and other guest columnists. I read them because I know it is important to hear what the opposition has to say.
As I read the Republican-founded ideas, they all reek with the same odor - money. They ask, "Where are we going to get the money for this?" "Why should we pay for that?" "What is this going to cost us?" Many of my Republican friends say, "You liberals like to spend our (Republicans) money."
But, it's all our money. Democrats and Republicans alike.
Most of my friends live in very nice homes, some in a gated community, new cars, cruises every year, travel around the world and live a very nice life. Why not? They worked hard for it. How hard? It depends on your definition of hard.
My problem is they think that when someone hasn't attained what they themselves have been fortunate enough to attain, they believe that person just didn't work as hard. The truth is, they may have worked harder, longer and still didn't come close to their level of achievement. That is just the way life is. It's not a level playing field; and if you're being honest with yourself, you realize it.
Now, does that mean we have to stop enjoying ourselves because everyone is not as fortunate as we are no matter what the reality is? Absolutely not, but it's our social responsibility to try to understand other people's problems and ameliorate them when possible.
If it means one less dinner out, one less golf game, so be it. It's only human. But, human is a dichotomy; therefore, I will say to be compassionate.
All I'm saying is when we stop worrying about "the money" and start worrying about our fellow human beings, we will be able to live a better life.
Just remember, the most horrible four-letter word is GREED.
