I read the "Letters to the Editor" in the Feb. 7 edition of Hernando Today and felt compelled to reply to the letter submitted by Peter Stathis.
His first paragraph stated that Social Security benefits were going to be cut. That is untrue; just a cost-of-living freeze is taking effect this year. It's true that a lot of retired people received letters stating that the Medicare premium was being raised, therefore reducing the amount received on the check.
I spoke to Social Security today and was told that was a mistake and another batch of letters will be mailed out to those same people.
I asked Social Security if President Barack Obama was to blame or responsible for any changes to Social Security and was told "absolutely not!" I was told he has enough problems to worry about. These same people complaining about Social Security wouldn't have the benefit of it if it didn't pass during Roosevelt's administration. There were people then that were bashing the president when he was trying to get Social Security passed. The same with Medicare years later.
It gets so disheartening to hear people bash our president, who is working so hard for the middle- and low-income people. Just ask all the unemployed, how are they going to afford health insurance? Their reply is, "I hope the health reform passes soon so I won't worry myself sick over this."
Obama is being blamed for putting us deeper and deeper in debt. Where were these complainers when President George Bush took office from a Democrat that gave him no debt. Bush gave tax breaks to the rich and put us so far in debt with an unnecessary war. Obama inherited the mess. We would have been in a deep depression if the banks and businesses weren't bailed out. At least he didn't go around America organizing tea parties and getting people rallied up and bad-mouthing the president like Sara Palin does!
I noted in that same letter the complaint that Obama had no experience in governing. What title did he have in Chicago and in the Senate?
Wake up, fellow Americans. Everything Obama is trying to do is for you - not himself!
