There are obviously divergent points of view surrounding the debate on the application of the First Amendment. I, while admittedly no constitutional scholar, believe that the right of free speech applies to individuals and not groups of people.
When a large group funded by huge sums of money is allowed to express their opinion, the people of that group also enjoy the individual right of speech in discussions and in the voting booth. This unfairly gives them a double voice.
Yes, there are other groups such as unions that enjoy that same privilege. However, the funds at their disposal are dwarfed by the obscene amounts of money available to some of the world's largest corporations. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out that they, in turn, would lean to and promote legislation that benefits them.
Ergo, "The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer." Simple as that!
